Advocacy Institute

TexTESOL IV cordially invites your participation at the Advocacy Institute at TexTESOL Conference. This event is a pre-conference event. It will be held on November 2, 2017, at the Westin Galleria in downtown Houston, TX.

Organized by TESOL IV, the Advocacy Institute will feature Cesar Moreno Perez, the Associate Director of the Human Rights and Community Relations Department at the American Federation of Teachers. Featured panelists will include Ramiro Fonseca, Community Engagement Manager, and Alpha Martinez, a two-time Academy for Teacher Excellence Presidential Distinguished Scholar awardee. The Advocacy Institute format combines elements of a traditional conference with in-depth, practical information about DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

Highlighted Session Description:

Educators and institutions play a critical role in helping to create learning environments free from racism, bullying, hate and the threat of deportation. Furthermore, immigration raids across the country terrorize communities. Thus, we need to be ready to defend the rights of children and their families. We can help to protect those with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status and others on our campuses and in our communities from the threat of deportation. The AFT and its partners across the country are on the front-lines fighting to keep families and communities together. These sessions will offer two things. First, these sessions will invite participants to engage in candid conversations about immigration, ICE raids, and the phaseout of DACA. Next, the speakers will present educators, school support staff and community partners with available tools and resources to help undocumented students fight back. Educators, school support staff, and community partners will be empowered to fight against the attacks, defend DACA, and help communities prepare for an immigration customs and enforcement (ICE) raid.

 Who Should Attend?

This event is organized for teachers, leaders, administrators, and teacher trainers from universities, K–12 systems, and private language schools.
