Building Global Bridges between Educators, Researchers, and Classrooms

In an effort to support the TexTESOL IV purpose, the Board has established two modes of publication: The Fourth Estate, TexTESOL IV’s practical quarterly,  and the Journal of Assessment and Teaching of English Language Learners (JATELL), TexTESOL IV’s scholarly professional journal.  Both publications are open access, online, peer-reviewed publications.

TexTESOL IV Publication Submission Types and Descriptions

Journal of Assessment and Teaching of English Language Learners

  1. Original Research

Original Research articles describe the aims, study, and methods of original research. The results of the research are reported, interpreted, and a discussion of the possible implications may be included. Original Research articles may also encompass disconfirming results which allow hypothesis elimination, reformulation and/or report on the non-reproducibility of previously published results. Original Research Articles are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 12,000 and may include up to 15 Figures/Tables. The abstract should have not more than 500 words. 

  1. Methods Articles

Methods articles present a new method or emerging technique and/or software that opens new avenues for the investigation of important issues in a field. Method manuscripts should include the objectives and validation of the method with a detailed protocol and example(s) of its application, as well as the limitations of current methods. In addition, there should be some data to demonstrate the power of the technique or effectiveness of the method. Methods Articles may also include personal insight of the significance of the technology for the field. Methods Articles are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 12,000 and may include up to 15 Figures/Tables. The abstract should have not more than 500 words. 

  1. Hypothesis and Theory Articles

Hypothesis and Theory articles present a novel argument, interpretation or model intended to introduce a new testable hypothesis or theory or support already existing theories. They should provide new insights into a significant question or issue and the argumentation must be closely tied to empirical data, where appropriate, leading to testable predictions. Hypothesis and Theory Articles are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 12,000 and may include up to 15 Figures/Tables. The abstract should have not more than 500 words. 

  1. Review Articles

Review articles cover topics that have seen significant development or progress in recent years with comprehensive depth, balanced perspective, intellectual insight, and broad general interest. Reviews do not merely summarize the literature, but should critique fundamental concepts, issues, and problems that define the field. Review articles CANNOT include unpublished material (unpublished/original data, submitted manuscripts, or personal communications) and may be rejected in review or reclassified, at a significant delay, if found to include such content. Any inclusion of verbatim text must be contained in quotation marks and clearly reference the original source. Review Articles are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 12,000 and may include up to 15 Figures/Tables. The abstract should have not more than 500 words. 

  1. Mini Review

Mini Review articles focus on current areas of investigation and recent developments in the field. They offer a succinct and clear summary of the topic, allowing readers to get up-to-date on new developments and/or emerging concepts. Mini Reviews must not include unpublished material (unpublished/original data, submitted manuscripts, or personal communications) and may be rejected or reclassified, at a significant delay, if found to include such content. Any inclusion of verbatim text must be contained in quotation marks and clearly reference the original source. Mini Reviews are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 3,000 and may contain no more than 2 Figures/Tables. Please note that should a Mini Review exceed 3,000 words; it will be changed to a Review Article. The abstract should have not more than 300 words. 

  1. Conceptual Analysis

Conceptual Analysis articles should provide insights into concepts, issues, and problems that define the field, with the aim of presenting a novel argument, interpretation, model, or critique. Conceptual Analysis articles CANNOT include unpublished material (unpublished/original data, submitted manuscripts, or personal communications) and may be rejected in review or reclassified, at a significant delay, if found to include such content. Any inclusion of verbatim text must be contained in quotation marks and clearly reference the original source. Conceptual Analysis articles are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 8,000 and may include up to 10 Figures/Tables. The abstract should have not more than 300 words. 

  1. Evaluations

Evaluations can be about a broad spectrum of topics that evaluate programs, courses, curricula, teaching methods, and other pedagogical elements as well as innovations at the organizational, environmental or policy levels relevant to the journal’s mission. Such articles will require a sufficient description of the program logistics, procedures, and participants/sample. Additionally, submissions will require a Discussion section that shares practical implications, lessons learned for future applications of the program, and acknowledgment of any methodological constraints. Evaluations have a maximum word count of 6,000 and may contain no more than 5 Figures/Tables. They are peer-reviewed, copy-edited, are citable, published in PDF and HTML format, and submitted for indexing in digital archives. The abstract should have not more than 300 words. 

  1. Empirical Study

Empirical Study articles describe the hypothesis, study, and methods of an empirical study. The results of the research are reported, interpreted and a discussion of the possible implications may be included. Empirical Study articles may also encompass disconfirming results which allow hypothesis elimination, reformulation and/or report on the non-reproducibility of previously published results. Empirical Study articles are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 8,000 and may include up to 10 Figures/Tables. The abstract should have not more than 300 words. 

  1. Book Reviews

Book Reviews are succinct and balanced one-page literary criticisms analyzing content, style, and merit of a recently published book. A Book Review should summarize but also evaluate and discuss the content of the book considering the current needs of the community. These articles are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 1,000 and may include 1 Figure/Table, however they should not contain unpublished or original data. Any registered Frontiers user may submit a Book Review. Submissions must carry the title Book Review: “Title of book”. The abstract should have not more than 150 words. 

  1. Editorials

Editorials are submitted exclusively by the host editor(s) of a Frontiers Research Topic, to convey to the reader the aims and objectives of the research that pertains to the topic, as well as placing it in a broader context. The Editorial should present the contributing articles of the Research Topic but should not be a mere table of content. As the final contributing article to the Research Topic, Editorials should be submitted once all expected articles have been accepted and published. Editorials have a word count of 1,000 for Topics with 5-10 articles. The word limit can be increased for each additional article in the Topic, up to a maximum of 5,000 words for 50 articles or more. Editorials should not include unpublished or original data, nor figures, and the inclusion of references is strongly encouraged. Submissions must carry the title Editorial: “Title of Research Topic”.

  1. Section Editorials

Section Editorials are written by Section Editors about their vision of the current challenges in their field of research. Section Editorials expose the major issues and expected developments in the field for the 21st century and help the readers to understand the scope of their specialty. The abstract should have not more than 150 words. 

  1. Corrigendum/Addendum

Corrigendum/Addendum should authors notice errors that affect the scholarly record or the integrity of the paper, authors are encouraged to submit a correction online. The cover letter must detail the reason(s) for and location(s) of the error(s) within the manuscript and the correct information. All authors of the original paper need to agree to the request for changes. Depending on the extent of the correction required, corrections may require peer review. Authors are informed that requests for changes beyond that described here may not be accepted for publication.

  1. Featured Article

Featured articles are practical in nature and written for a general ELT audience, are essentially a newsletter articles and not a research article, but may include resources and research recommendations at the end. Featured Articles will highlight some features of ELT that play a role in the everyday classroom—if possible, on various levels, incorporate important points that educators can take away and use, are about innovative, unusual, or interesting things you have found in your years of experience in ELT, trends in ELT and how they might influence teaching (positively or negatively), useful, tested classroom practice tips or strategies. You may embed tables and figures, but be prepared to provide jpgs if requested. Featured articles are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 3,000 and may include up to 15 Figures/Tables. The abstract should have not more than 300 words. 

  1. Evaluations

  1. Opinion Articles

Opinion articles allow researchers to contribute viewpoints on the interpretation of facts, value of methods used, weaknesses and strengths of any scientific theory or on any topic relevant to the field of research. Opinion Articles allow maximum freedom of scholarly expression for researchers, encourage constructive discussion and are peer-reviewed. Emotionally-charged argumentation is not appropriate. Opinion Articles should be supported by evidence (whether factual or anecdotal) and promote dialogue; however, they should not contain unpublished or original data. Opinion Articles should be properly substantiated, with typically at least five references, have a maximum word count of 2,000 and may contain no more than 1 Figure/Table. The abstract should have not more than 300 words. 

  1. Perspective Articles

Perspective articles present a viewpoint on an important area of investigation. They focus on a specific field or discipline, and discuss current advances or future directions, and may include original data as well as personal insights and opinions. Perspectives are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 3,000 and may contain no more than 2 Figures/Tables. The abstract should have not more than 300 words. 

  1. Commentaries

Commentaries call attention to a scholarly paper of note or provide critical comments on a previous publication. They have a maximum word count of 1,500, may include no more than 1 Figure/Table and the title must be as follows: “Commentary: <i>Title of the original article</i>”. General Commentaries are peer-reviewed and should be properly substantiated, with typically at least five references. They should not contain unpublished or original data. The abstract should have not more than 150 words. 

  1. Lesson Plans, Teaching Strategies, or Teaching Tip Articles

Lesson Plans, Teaching Strategies, or Teaching Tip articles present a new method or emerging technique and/or software that opens aid in effective instruction. Lesson Plans, Teaching Strategies, or Teaching Tip articles should include the objectives with a protocol and example(s) of its application. In addition, Lesson Plans, Teaching Strategies, or Teaching Tip articles clearly state the materials needed, the student-oriented objectives, the outcome, and the duration of the lesson; are clear and easy to follow; contain varied practice activities; and include original worksheets or handouts for classroom use (preferred, but not required). Lesson Plans, Teaching Strategies, or Teaching Tip articles may also include personal insight of the significance of the Lesson Plan, Teaching Strategy, or Teaching Tip in the field. Lesson Plans, Teaching Strategies, or Teaching Tip articles are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 1,500 and may include up to 5 Figures/Tables. The abstract should have not more than 500 words.

  1. Book Reviews

  1. Board of Director Reports

Board of Director Report are submitted exclusively by the Board of Directors, to inform members of the work, aims, and objectives of the Board. These reports should present the work of each Director on the Board as presented to the Board. Reports should not be a mere table of contents. Board of Director Reports have a word count of 1,000 for each reporting Director. Submissions must carry the title Board of Director Report: “Month Year”.
